A Summer at Versailles

We can’t leave our trip to Paris without a detour to Versailles. Southwest is Paris, this historic place started out as a modest hunting lodge in 1623 before it grew to be the wonder that stands today.

A palace steeped in history and romance, revolution and fashion. The grounds also contain many buildings, including the Grand and Petit Trianon.

It’s the perfect summer day when we visit. It’s not too hot to enjoy the grounds. Before we tour, we slip away into the grounds. Too soon, as we run through the lush labyrinth, we get lost. But instead of worrying, we go deeper into the garden until something changes.

It’s hard to pin down, but the air smells different, the sounds change. We look down to discover our clothes had changed as well. We are in rococo styled dresses. Our hair is pinned up. We laugh and twirl and dance as we continue through the garden.

Suddenly, the path opens up and we come upon a group of women, dressed as we are, eating an elaborate lunch.

There’s a woman the rest of the group orbits around. She is their sun. When she laughs, they laugh.

“I know you that is,” you whisper.

The woman looks up and notices us. Instead of calling out in alarm at the appearance of two strangers, she smiles and waves us over like she’s expecting us.

“Who is it?” I ask, although I have a hunch.

“Marie Antoinette.
